Cyrille Aimée

  • Venue: Duncan-Williams Performance Hall 1801 Exeter Road Germantown, TN, 38138 United States (map)

Improvisation is not just a technique for Grammy-nominated artist Cyrille Aimée. It’s a way of life that allows her to share her engaging voice and sparkling creativity with the world. By opening herself to the whim of the moment, Aimée has ventured from singing on street corners in Europe to dazzling audiences at some of the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals; from singing in gypsy encampments in her native France to acting on Broadway; from braving the notoriously tough audiences at New York’s Apollo Theatre to being hailed by The Wall Street Journal as “one of the most promising jazz singers of her generation.”

Among her many accolades, Aimée won the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition and the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition. She was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal Competition as well as the TV5MONDE series Talent Acoustic. Recognized for her talents by musical theater icon Stephen Sondheim, Aimée co-starred with Bernadette Peters in a Sondheim tribute at New York’s City Center in 2013. The experience inspired her to dig deeper into Sondheim’s repertoire, resulting in her fourth album, Move On: A Sondheim Adventure.

For Aimée, the future holds the promise of many more surprises ahead. After more than a decade in New York City, she’s embarked on a new chapter in New Orleans, perhaps the only other city in the U.S. with a mélange of influences and accents that matches her own. She’s focusing more intently on her songwriting, taking her music in fresh new directions. As always for Cyrille Aimée, the only thing that’s certain is that she’ll find a creative spark and a new pathway from whatever happens next.

Parking at GPAC is always FREE.
